My mom made a big salad on a tray. It consisted of mixed leaf lettuce, tomatoes, olives, pepperoni and fresh mozzarella. Then she "drizzled" balsamic vinaigrette over the whole thing. By vinaigrette I mean mostly vinegar, not much olive oil, and by drizzled I mean poured.
A little balsamic goes a long way, I think.
Well, Salty D. does not like vinegar. It's funny because you'd think with a name like Salty he would love it. Don't you picture him enjoying salt-n-vinegar potato chips (a.k.a. crisps)? But no, the smell of it makes him hurl, for whatever reason. This is a drag for me whenever we go to a british style pub or a boardwalk and there are really good french fries (a.k.a. chips) which I want to flavor with malt vinegar.
I think it goes back to when he would smell hot vinegary easter egg dye in school. I think it's a reaction to Christian traditions. I think he doesn't love Jesus, that's what this is all about.
So applying this logic, my mother's salad = Jesus worship.
Just not into either of them, even though Jesus was a smart and compassionate Jewish man.
D. really likes fresh mozzarella, but the fact that it was soaked in balsamic vinegar was a real turnoff.
Mom said to D., "What? You don't want any salad?" No, mom, I told you, he doesn't eat vinegared stuff. It's weird but that's how it is. If I want to clean with vinegar at home I do it when he's not there. But he'll eat pickles, so, go figure. I keep asking you for dressing on the side. You drenched this salad.
Mom said, "Well you need enough on there to taste the vinegar!" OMG. So very much vinegar. "I don't remember him not liking vinegar!"
That's OK, you've only been serving him dinner for 20 years now with the same conversation happening at every meal.
Mom said, "Are you sure you won't try this salad? It's got olives, cheese... I made so much of it because I thought you'd like it!"
No thank you.
Mom said, "Really? But it's GOOD vinegar. Really good balsamic vinegar."
So I ate extra portions of it to assuage all. And then the excessive vinegar hurt my mouth.
