Every kid
in the ‘hood
Liked Christmas a lot...
But Salty D.
From New Jersey
Oh no, he did NOT!
Salty D. hated Christmas!
The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be that his head wasn't screwed on quite right.
It could be, perhaps, that his boots were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.
He knew every kid in the ghetto streets
Was wishing and hoping for toys and sweets.
"Already hanging their stockings?" he snarled with a sneer.
"Next month is Christmas! It's practically here!"
Then he growled -- Christmas tunes he refused to be humming --
"I MUST find a way to keep Christmas from coming!"
But as he paused, Salty D. put a hand to his ear.
And he heard a sound rising, becoming quite clear.
It started in low. Then it started to grow...
Why, this sound was quite merry!
It couldn't be so!
But it WAS merry! VERY!
He looked over at Wal-Mart
He went into first gear!
Then he shook!
What he felt was the best feeling all year!
Every bike in the valley, the big and the small,
Was roaring! Hondas, Indians, Harleys and all!
And he puzzled for hours, `till his puzzler was sore.
Salty D. thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store."
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!"
And what happened then...?
Well...around here they say
That Salty D’s heart
Grew three sizes that day!
And the minute his heart didn't feel quite so tight,
He roared off with his gifts through the gray morning light.
(2,000 motorcycles, 3,000 bikers, in line on the street with gifts for the children.)
with apologies to Dr. Seuss
but thanks to ABATE/Turning Point of the Lehigh Valley Toy Run!
