I think "shit-stem" is derogatory for "system". Isn't it true that the Sex Pistols are really just the punk Monkees as manufactured by Malcolm McLaren? What's the difference between them and the Backstreet Boys other than 20 years? A poser is a poser is a poser. I would wager that Joe Strummer never needed to remind anyone that he was a punk. Johnny Lydon is full of shite! Seeing them perform now would be as pathetic as the Stones at the Super Bowl. For Christ's sake, have some dignity! Apparently, the Stones all died shortly after releasing Tattoo You 24 years ago but noone has had the heart to tell them. Back to the Sex Pistols...I heard Anarchy in the UK will be replacing Lust For Life as the new catchy ditty for advertising cruise lines. Also, and this is true, Johnny Rotten and the boys didn't cause a fuss when McFarlane Toys announced they would be releasing a 3-D album cover of Never Mind The Bollocks. I'm not sure what's cool about words in 3-D, but I don't work for McFarlane Toys. Wow, I sound like an angry white guy. But wait, that can't be, I don't fit the punk profile. Holy shit, I must be happy! I am so sick and tired of every clique who whines, "Don't label us because we're different!", looking down on anyone who is not as different as they are. Shut the hell up already! The Clash were cool and were a great band because they were cool and were a great band, period. Not because they told us they were cool and were a great band. Johnny Rotten can kiss my middle-aged, scrawny, working class, white ass with his Millionaire lips! Sorry, I'm done now.

Amen to that Deja!

Good rant!

Yes, the Pistols WERE McLaren's Monkees. Which makes the "we won't be your monkey" comment on the napkin even funnier.

And they pulled a KISS move by doing a disco song post-Bollocks (but I can't bash that right now because then we'd have to debate Rock the Casbah)

However, I have respect for what the Pistols WERE and what this one record did. And they wrote their own songs, mostly.

I listened to Never Mind... today and some of the tracks resonate even more now with the U.S. leadership, than when I was a pissed off teenager.

But they're still self-made whores that lost their integrity with the passage of time. Of course, with Lydon I argue with myself whether he's being cheeky and manipulative, or clueless - could go either way.

Joe Strummer never lost integrity and transcended the "punk" label and any label.

http://www.furious.com/perfect/pistols.html this is an opinionated soul I also agree with.

p.s. don't even get me started on Eddie Vedder at the Hall of Lame ceremony inducting the Ramones a couple of years ago. Sick.

And yeah, if they're gonna do this shit, do it in Cleveland! Cleveland Rocks!

SALTY D

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? YOU CAN'T COMPARE JOE TO ANYBODY. WITHOUT A DOUBT THE COOLEST HUMAN BEING TO WALK THIS PLANET!! HOWEVER I DIGRESS, THE PISTOLS CHANGED THE WORLD AND ARE TOTALLY CORRECT IN THEIR ASSESSMENT OF THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF LAME. THAT BULLSHIT ABOUT MALCOM IS A FALLACY. HE WAS JUST A MACHIAVELLIAN MANAGER WHICH IS PRETTY COOL ON SOME LEVELS. HE'S A PRETTY INTERSTING GUY ON HIS OWN. BUT THE PISTOLS ACCOMPLISHED WHAT THEY SET OUT TO DO.

OK, stop yelling :) I think we're all in agreement about the Clash here.

I believe we were comparing the Sex Pistols to THE MONKEES.

The Monkees were pretty good even though they were just sheer entertainment.

The Sex Pistols had guts. MacLaren is a vanguard in his own right, it's not like he's Lou Perlman or whoever that old wheezy queen is who put NSync together.

Malcolm's mid-80s stuff was interesting albeit not rock-n-roll -- You hear his influence, which was influenced by so many other musicians in the world, in mainstream music now and they sound just like what he did 20 years ago.

I feel like I'm not making any sense today.

Anti Jon

You are correct in saying McMuffin is no Pearlman, but when you search a demographic and push to fit it that's poserish--they did do a ton of shit but have spent all these years fukn it up--im sorry i disagree with "guts" it's far too easy to tell Kurt Loader to pish off-The napkin proves not that Swamy Lydon is a punk, just a cranky old dick NEVER MIND JJ BULLOCKS!!!!
