I just watched Reign Over Me. I love Don Cheadle. He can do no wrong. Adam Sandler, on the other hand, despite his semetic good looks, does things like Little Nicky. But I do love him in more serious character roles.
First, the DVD was FOREVER. I started it after dinner and I think it's time for a midnight snack.
Second, I have a lot of residual issues with - - now here's a cliche - - the attacks that happened 9/11/01. Seriously. Not to the point where I would have voted for Giuliani to run the country, but enough that I've had lots of crash-and-burning nightmares and talked to my shrink about it. Totally normal stuff, all the psychological effects that have been beaten to death by the media - I fit the whole profile. Standard issue.
So the movie, which if you didn't know, deals with a dude who lost his wife and three daughters in one of the plane crashes, s l o w l y builds toward a big breakthrough with the main characters, I won't spoil it for you.
And of course The Who's Reign O'er Me is featured prominently because moviemakers like to use anthemic songs in their movies and then use the song titles as the movie title which really, really annoys me. Even though I do it myself, and annoy myself.
At the end (I swear, I'm not spoiling!) Reign Oer Me comes on, and it's like a big release moment, and the voice starts, "Only love - can make it rain..." and it's not Roger Daltry but fuckin' Eddie Vedder.
And I started bawling. Like, so hard, it hurt my chest. Salty D. said, "Did you take your medication???!!!" I said, yes, and sobbed:
EDDIE VEDDER RUINS EVERYTHING!!! HE RUINED THIS SONG! HE RUINED JOHNNY RAMONE FOR ME! HE RUINS EVERYTHING!!
Whew. My tears have dried now, on their own, and maybe I was being irrational, maybe I was trying to get past some of my post-traumatic emotional stress same as the main character, but really, did Adam have to have Eddie bleat out one of Daltry's most amazing performances?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds Eddie Vedder ummmm....let's just say it's the Bob Dylan effect.
Intense, brilliant writer with something to say, just PLEASE let someone else say it for you!!!

Veddar is the man, he takes that song to a whole new level!
Great movie, a far cry from Billy Madison!
