A few years ago, I styled myself exactly like her. I copied this picture.
And oooooh she's soooo controversial. What with the kissing a Black man and draping herself with the American flag and walking around naked, pretending to be a lesbian.
And now she's getting self-righteous environmentalists cranked up about how she wears fur and hunts and uses lots of jet fuel and invests ungreenly but she was invited to Live Earth to perform her crappish new song and that made her a hypocrite. It's crappish because of the militant drum beats and lyrics like "Remember this, none of it's real, including the way you feel." WHAT?!
Does anyone really look at Madonna as a role model? I mean, except for Britney? A trend-monger yes. But an Icon (self-professed)? An authority? Then calm yourselves. There are more pressing matters than getting pissy with an entertainer who is jumping on a bandwagon and doing her same old schtick. We're all trying to learn more about what the hell we've done to our earth. Be the change.
I don't know, maybe it's because I work with people who actually put on their wading boots, go into the rivers, test the water and examine the wildlife, find the pollution, and work to fix it, all in their spare time. Or maybe it's because I know some people who refuse to buy a car and they lobby for public transportation. I have no tolerance for the other people I meet who get all uppity about organic farming and shopping local and "living sustainably" if they don't actually get it and do it. Just be honest and take action. I don't do all that but I do what I can and I'm conscious of what I use and waste. Nobody's perfect.
Just the fact that you were born and you consume food and produce shit means that YOU aren't friendly to the environment. And if you are a jet-setter who doesn't recycle your shoe boxes and wears synthetic clothes made in an Indonesian sweat shop and buys brand new houses in what was once a cornfield, STOP IT. Stop suckin' up to Al Gore and yelling at us about light bulbs.
Philips is gonna make a freakin' fortune off of fluorescent light bulbs.
All these entertainers producing carbon and talking about saving the world - we're not really worried about saving the world. We're worried about saving ourselves. The planet will still be here long after we're done totally screwing ourselves out of it. Life, death, change is all so inconvenient.

I just read this article on the Live Earth thing (in my new favorite mag in my new country - OK!) and all these environmentally concious celebrities. They noted how many of them drive hybrid cars and a big deal was made out of Jennifer Aniston's 3 minute showers that include brushing her teeth. ??? I was thinking the same thing - Big deal that so-and-so drives a hybrid car. If he gave up his private jet it would help the environment a lot more.
But then I read your blog and I realized that I don't actually care if they have private jets and whatever, it's the fact that they tout themselves as Miss/Mr. Environmentalist. Just do your part and move on.
P.S. In my first 24 hours in the UK, I have discovered the Brits are way more environmentally concious than the US. I don't know why that surprised me... but I'm off to my driving lesson in my shrinky-dink size car with my $8/gal gasoline.
