It's so exciting when a new local restaurant opens. Not the Bennigans or the Paneras - but actual original new restaurants. I have no idea how restaurateurs survive sometimes. When a restaurant is packed, we always say, "this place is a gold mine!" but there are few independent restaurants that are actually mining gold.
A new watering hole is opening tonight. Christian's Spring Tavern in Nazareth (not far from the Andretti's old speedway) is a promising little place with a no-nonsense yummy menu of food and spirits and beer.
A friend of a friend is opening it, and one day when D. and I were out cruising through the countryside, we came upon the Tavern (which won't have neon and spotlights and big signs outside) and knocked on the screen door to ask when they'd finally open. We were given a full tour of the comfy place, all the renovations meticulously crafted and restored as much as possible.
Three years in the works, they've been delayed in opening because of state inspectors. Like, months of delay. Imagine if you're a couple trying to open a business and your livelihood depends on it and you just keep getting jerked around by bureaucrats.
Anyway, if you're in the area, it's a sweet ride into the country and a nice place to slow down and relax. I hope to get there next week to check it out.
